Following Vaughan Oliver’s death on 29 December 2019, Unit Editions saw an immediate surge in demand for their book “Vaughan Oliver: Archive,” which sold out within days. In response to widespread requests — and as a way to honor Oliver’s life and legacy — Unit produced a limited-edition, single-volume reprint.

A designer who famously preserved the things others discarded, Oliver kept proofs, running sheets, vinyl labels, original artwork for era-defining album covers, videotapes, books, and a trove of odd ephemera that fueled his imagination. “VO: Archive” opens a window into this collection, now housed at UCA Epsom: a dense, tactile treasury of process, experimentation, and graphic invention.

Organised thematically — colour, hybrid forms, typography, the body, mystery and more — the book also showcases a wealth of Oliver’s press advertising, much of it unseen since its original appearance in the music weeklies.

Designed by Spin and written by Adrian Shaughnessy, the volume gathers previously unpublished material, extensive interviews with Oliver, and contributions from his long-time collaborator Chris Bigg.

A percentage of all sales is donated to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at St George’s Hospital, in recognition of the care Oliver received.
