SEASON 2 : LISTEN NOW
A vintage 12-inch edition of “Aikea-Guinea,” a quintessential Cocteau Twins release on 4AD, featuring four non-album tracks wrapped in Vaughan Oliver’s evocative, era-defining sleeve design.
Released in March 1985 on 4AD, “Aikea-Guinea” is one of Cocteau Twins’ most distinctive mid-period EPs, building on the otherworldly sound they had begun refining on “Treasure.” Issued as both a 7-inch and a 12-inch, the expanded 12-inch format features four non-album tracks — “Aikea-Guinea,” “Kookaburra,” “Quisquose,” and “Rococo” — each steeped in the band’s signature blend of luminous guitars, abstract lyricism, and elliptical rhythm.
The EP is also a landmark in the visual history of 4AD. Vaughan Oliver, working with Nigel Grierson as 23 Envelope, created the sleeve design — a tactile, dream-soaked composition that mirrors the music’s sense of mystery and emotional abstraction. Oliver’s work on releases from this period helped define the visual identity of the label and shaped an entire generation of graphic designers.
“Aikea-Guinea” appeared as a bonus EP with some Canadian pressings of “Treasure,” broadening its reach. The title track was later included on “The Pink Opaque” (1985), and a remastered version surfaced on “Stars and Topsoil” (2000). Notably, the 7-inch version of “Kookaburra” includes a brief percussive introduction absent from the 12-inch edition.
The EP has been reissued several times, including as part of “The Box Set” (1991) and “Lullabies to Violaine” (2005), the latter featuring an alternate remixed version of “Aikea-Guinea.” According to Robin Guthrie, the title refers to a Scottish colloquialism for a seashell — an oblique, image-rich phrase that aligns perfectly with the band’s poetic opacity.
Today, the original 12-inch release of “Aikea-Guinea” is sought after for both its music and its artwork: a seamless union of Cocteau Twins’ evolving sonic vocabulary and Vaughan Oliver’s unmistakable design, capturing a moment when sound and image became inseparable parts of the same dreamlike world.
