SEASON 2 : LISTEN NOW
A newly remastered collection of Xmal Deutschland’s 4AD work — Fetisch, Tocsin and key singles — presented with former V23 collaborator, Timothy O’Donnell’s design and Nigel Grierson photography that echoes the band’s stark, mythic post-punk aesthetic.
In the early 1980s, Xmal Deutschland arrived in the UK like a transmission from another world. Their jagged rhythms, commanding presence, and German-language vocals — delivered with fierce intensity by Anja Huwe — captivated British audiences who had never encountered anything quite like them. What followed were two seminal releases on 4AD, “Fetisch” (1983) and “Tocsin” (1984), records whose icy atmospheres and propulsive, shadow-lit energy helped define the darker edges of post-punk. To British ears, the music felt both foreign and immediate, unknowable yet magnetic. As Huwe later reflected, “At some point, it seemed to people we just… disappeared. So this myth of Xmal Deutschland just got bigger and bigger over the years.”
“Gift: The 4AD Years” commemorates that extraordinary moment. Presented as a limited 3×LP / 2×CD set, it gathers newly remastered editions of the band’s two 4AD albums — remastered at Abbey Road for 2025 — alongside key tracks from related EPs and singles, including “Incubus Succubus II” and “Qual.” Together, these recordings trace the arc of a band whose sound blended post-punk, goth, minimalism, and ritualistic drive into something unmistakably their own.
The collection’s visual presentation pays homage to the group’s original aesthetic. The cover, designed by Timothy O’Donnell, incorporates photography by Peter Schulte and draws directly from the design language of 23 Envelope, the legendary studio behind 4AD’s most iconic imagery. Original sleeve photography by Nigel Grierson is also included, reinforcing the spectral, dream-frosted look that accompanied the band’s early releases.
A separate photo booklet rounds out the set, featuring striking images by Kevin Cummins, Paul Slattery, Sheila Rock, and others, alongside new text by writer Chris Roberts, offering fresh perspectives on the band’s legacy and enduring mystique.
More than an archival release, “Gift: The 4AD Years” is a vivid portrait of Xmal Deutschland at their most potent — a restoration of the era when their sound bewitched audiences, reshaped post-punk, and left a mythic silhouette that still towers today.
