A dark, art-rock exploration of mood and texture from Tulipomania, pairing their genre-shifting synth-punk sensibility with a striking sleeve designed by Vaughan Oliver and v23.
Originally released in 2016, “This Gilded Age” presents Tulipomania at their most atmospheric and visually defined. Built from Tom Murray’s vocals, bass, and multi-instrumental framework and Cheryl Gelover’s synths and harmonies — with contributions from Mitch Smith — the album draws on the band’s wide-ranging influences: post-punk, art rock, minimal electronics, and a theatrical, noir-tinged sense of mood.
Its visual identity is integral to the project. The sleeve was designed by Vaughan Oliver and v23, whose tactile, dreamlike imagery helped define a generation of independent music culture. The collaboration amplifies Tulipomania’s aesthetic: shadowed, evocative, and rich in detail.
Across its songs, “This Gilded Age” explores shifting textures and emotional undercurrents, revealing a band unconcerned with genre boundaries and committed to a deeply crafted, cinematic approach to sound.
