An extremely rare original flyposter produced in New York for the 2013 launch of David Bowie’s “The Next Day,” featuring Jonathan Barnbrook’s now-iconic white square intervention over Bowie’s original “Heroes” cover.
This original flyposter was produced in New York in 2013 as part of the second wave of street-level promotion for David Bowie’s album “The Next Day.” Measuring 600 × 900 mm, it reproduces the album artwork that famously obscured the cover of “Heroes” with a stark white square — a gesture that became one of the most widely discussed visual statements of Bowie’s later career.
Designed by Jonathan Barnbrook, the white square was not a graphic cover-up but a conceptual act: a refusal of nostalgia, authorship reasserted through negation. By overwriting one of the most recognisable images in popular music, the artwork questioned legacy, identity, and repetition at the moment Bowie re-emerged after a decade of silence.
These flyposters were never intended as gallery objects. They were produced for outdoor use, pasted in public space, and rarely made available for sale. As such, surviving examples are exceptionally scarce. This edition is offered signed by Jonathan Barnbrook, or unsigned by request. Please specify your preference when ordering.
As flyposters, the paper stock is thin and vulnerable by nature. While all items are in very good condition, minor buckling may occur, including during transit. Each poster will be packed with care to minimise handling and movement.
A rare artifact from one of the most significant visual and musical returns of the 21st century.
